How to Fish Island Progression: Unlock Order and Quest Hand-Ins
Updated 2026-08-24
Understand how quests, boss trophies, and island objectives open the next part of How to Fish, including the common piranha and pufferfish roadblocks.
How island progression works
The Steam store description states that quests and bosses unlock new islands. In practice, each island has a short quest chain that points to a boss. Defeating the boss drops a distinctive trophy item, and returning that trophy to the local quest giver unlocks travel to the next island. Generic meat chunks from the same fight are not accepted, which is the most common cause of progression confusion.
Lighthouse → Forest Island
Start at the Lighthouse. Earn cash, buy the Basic Fishing Rod, then a Knife, and sharpen it. Buy a Beer Can, give it to the Lighthouse Keeper, and use the returned Empty Beer Can to summon the Spider Crab. Kill it, feed the meat to the Lighthouse Keeper, and receive the boat keys. Buy the Radar for $10. Sail northwest to the Forest Island.
Forest Island → Desert Island
On the Forest Island, save for the Shotgun and collect five leeches from the ground. Feed three leeches to the lady by the lake; she gives you a modified lure. Use it to summon the Giant Piranha. Kill the minions first, then the boss. Return the Giant Piranha skeleton to the lady to receive coordinates for the Desert Island.
Desert Island → Rock Island
Desert Island has two major objectives: hunt the Blue Shark with the Standard Lure to activate the Grill, and defeat the Pufferfish to advance. The Blue Shark unlocks cooking and the lighter. The Pufferfish is a difficulty spike; the quest wants its distinct fin/trophy piece, not meat chunks. After both hand-ins, you receive the route to Rock Island.
Rock Island and Volcano Island
Rock Island and Volcano Island are the late-game zones. Community reports mention The Old Pike on Rock Island and the final boss on Volcano Island. Tactics for these areas are still being documented, so treat community guides as preliminary and verify drops before selling them.
If the next step does not trigger
Talk to every active quest giver on your current island while the trophy is still in your inventory. Compare unusual trophy parts against generic meat chunks and try the distinct item first. In co-op, confirm which player collected the trophy and whether that player is present for the hand-in. If a required world item did not spawn, preserve your session state and check current community reports before grinding again.
